You only have to walk in the grounds of the hotel to experience the wide variety of bird life here. The 27 acres of grounds, situated in the oxbow of the river, have been protected since ancient times. Today they host two Sites of Special Scientific Interest. With buzzards circling above, herons, kingfishers, ducks and dippers in our river, the grounds are a birdwatcher’s delight. (Ask Reception for a list of birds which have been seen in the grounds.)
Over fifty bird boxes are set up in the grounds for the nests of blue tits, great tits and flycatchers. Flycatchers return year after year to make their nests on our land.
However, the Heart of Wales is also a bird watcher's paradise offering three RSPB reserves, National Nature Reserves with Sites of Special Scientific Interest and several areas of local importance managed by county Wildlife Trusts. At many of these sites those really special birds of Mid Wales such as Wood Warblers, Redstarts and Pied Flycatchers can be seen and heard throughout the summer. Also Red Kites which happily are now no longer restricted to their former stronghold in this part of Mid Wales. The Elan Valley, Brecon Beacons and Cambrian Mountains are also on our doorstep so you may like to get out and about. You can take your own car and with the detailed directions we will give you, explore the countryside. Come as a group or join with other guests and get taken by Land Rover on a tour to remember.
